This question may be more appropriate in the upcoming GIDW so it can wait if better answered there. When you have guests on a recorded session that you use in a course, do you get their permission formally or informally? Do you compensate them or is there some sort of exchange like getting in front of your email list? For example - in Tripwire Toolkit, there’s a session with Sage. This could also be reversed - what are your expectations when you’re a guest?
Kate's answer
Kate's take, in a sentence or two
Kate says compensation for guest speakers really varies—she's paid some people, not others, depending on the relationship and what's being asked (teaching original strategy/IP warrants more pay than just showing up for a casual panel chat). She's always upfront about expectations, often offers thank-you gifts even when not paying, and isn't afraid to negotiate (like countering a $250 fee with $100 or a trade such as an email promo swap)—if someone says no, that's fine, and she just moves on without taking offense. As a guest herself, she follows similar logic: she won't pay to appear on someone's show, but her willingness to speak for free versus expecting payment depends on her goals, the prep involved, and her relationship with the host.
